1.
How much time does it take for a message sent from the company
or the vessel, via Sat-C facility, to reach a Stratos Land
Earth Station?
The time depends on a number of factors. In the shore-to-ship
direction, it depends on your Internet Service Provider. STRATOS
has no control over the Internet and sometimes there can be
delays in message deliveries.
In the ship-to-shore direction, C-Sat messages are sent to
Goonhilly at a rate of 600 bits per second. Inmarsat C is
a store and forward system; therefore, delivery from the Inmarsat
C to Stratos depends on the levels of traffic in the system.
It is typically 2-3 minutes.
2. How much time does it
take for a message to leave from a Stratos Land Earth Station
and reach a vessel's Sat-C terminal or the opposite?
Again, in the ship-to-shore direction, delivery
depends on the Internet. In the shore-to-ship direction, once
the message is received by Stratos it is queued in the LES
for delivery. From that point can take typically 2-5 minutes
for delivery, depending on traffic. Also if the terminals
are switched off or not receiving, the system will try to
send the message 5 times over 5 minutes.
3. The delivery notification,
after sending e-mail to a vessel, verifies delivery to Stratos
Land Earth Station or delivery to the vessel?
The PDN (Positive Delivery Notification) confirms
delivery to the vessel.
4. Does Stratos offer Read
Notification, meaning that when the e-mail message reaches
the vessel's Sat-C terminal (not Stratos Land Station), a
message arrives to the company, saying that the message has
reached the Sat-C terminal?
The PDN confirms delivery to the ship, but
cannot confirm whether the message has been read.
5. Why does it take so long for a Non-Delivery Notification
to be received, when the vessel is unreachable? Is there a
way to shorten this time interval?
The NDN is sent from the LES within approximately
5 minutes. Sometimes the system does not release it for some
minutes and sometimes the Internet delays the message.
6. Is there a way for Delivery
/ Non-Delivery Notification messages that we receive, to include
the original Subject and Sent Date/Time of the actual message?
PDNs and NDNs do include this information.
7. When composing a Mail
message, how many bits is it?
There are 8bits per character.
8. How many symbols are
there in a full line?
67 symbols
9. How many symbols are there in a Standard Header?
55 symbols. However, the header is not a fixed
block of 55 characters. This only represents a standard header
of Msg Ref / date & time etc. On top of this, you have
to add the sender's e-mail address.
10. When pressing ENTER
how many symbols are counted?
2 symbols.
